Rome, SANA – A Syrian delegation headed by Minister of Agriculture Ahmad al-Qadiri took part in the 40th Conference of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) held in Italy.
During his speech at the Conference on Tuesday, al-Qadiri called upon the international organizations to increase support to the
agricultural sector in Syria and to carry out sustainable development projects which contribute to developing and supporting agricultural production in the country.
The Minister pointed out that the terrorist war targeting Syria and its people in addition to the unilateral coercive economic measures
imposed on the Syrian people caused damage to all sectors, particularly the agricultural sector, and had a negative impact on food security.
He stressed that the Syrian government gives top priority to the agricultural sector through supporting farmers to alleviate the
negative effects of the current circumstances in the country that are caused by terrorism, in addition to the challenges caused by climate change.
Al-Qadiri reviewed the agricultural situation in Syria during the past three decades, asserting that Syria achieved self-sufficiency in most agricultural products and produced surplus quantities for exportation.
196 countries and 100 governmental and non-governmental organizations took part in the conference, which end on July 8.
