Dec 23, 2013

Damascus, (SANA)-Minister of Health Saad al-Nayef affirmed that the national vaccination campaign against polio, concluded on December 16th, has reached 2.177 million children under the age of five.

"The biggest number of the vaccinated children was in the eastern city of Dir Ezzor, reaching nearly 294.000 children while 269.000 were vaccinated in Hama and 247.000 in al-Hasaka," the Minister said in at a press conference on Monday.

"The campaign has been made through 1247 health centers and 3751 roaming teams under the supervision of 707 persons in cooperation with the Red Crescent organization," Minister al-Nayef added.

He denied as baseless and untrue the news of one of the agencies claiming that Dir Ezzor was excluded from the vaccines.

The Minister affirmed that the vaccines of the next campaign due between 5-9 May has arrived in all Syrian cities, particularly the eastern regions, adding that the UNICEF has provided the Ministry with 8 million polio dose vaccines.

For his part, Expert at the World Health Organization Salah al-Haithami said that there were no polio cases among the Syrian displaced in the neighboring countries until now.
