Good Results for Syrian Athletes at Conclusion of 7th SOMENA Regional Games

Damascus, (SANA) – The 7th Special Olympics Middle East/ North Africa (SOMENA) Regional Games concluded its activities on Friday.

22 Arab countries and Iran participated in the event.

The athletics events wrapped up competitions with the national team who reaping 2 gold, 6 silvers and 1 bronze medals.

In the 200-meter-race, Iyad Kohla was awarded the gold medal in the age category 16-21, whereas the silver medal went for Mohammad al-Kasser in the age category 12-15 and Milad Ibrahim (22 and above), Doaa Hamdan (12-15), Walaa Fneikher (16-21) and Lina Aslan (22-and above). The bronze medal was granted to Fatema Arash in the age category 12-15.

In the long jump race, Naela al-Mir won the gold medal in the age category (22 and above), whereas Mohammad Hamdan won the silver medal in the age category 12-15.

In the swimming competitions, the Syrian team won 3 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals in the morning competitions which included butterfly style, free style, backstroke and breaststroke.

Syria also earned 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals in the roller skating.

Syrian weightlifter Mohammed Hassan Hamdan won 4 gold medals, while Mohammad Mattar won 2 gold medals, 1 silver and 1 bronze.

Syria's women table tennis team was able to won 1 gold and 1 bronze medal, while the men's team won a total of four medals with 1 gold medal and 3 bronze.

In the bocce competition, the Syrian team won the gold medal.

In football, Syrian team B won the gold medal for group A, while the Syrian floor hockey team A won the gold medal of group B.

The Syrian bicycles team won three gold medals and one bronze medal.

In equestrian games, Syrian rider Rawan Abu Sharifeh came in first in group A of the CI event (walking the horse without supervision) with Fares Ammar Hafez coming in second place, while Ahmad Fakhouri came in second in group B which was won by Bahrain's Ali al-Kamil.

In the Equestrian CS event (walking the horse with supervision), Syrian rider Sari Najjar came on second after the UAE's Wafaa Suleiman al-Shamsi , while in the BI event (walk, trot, jog without supervision) Syrian rider Hadya Aard Romelli coming insecond followed by Syria's Abdullah Qassas who tied in third place with Egypt's Omar Mohammad al-Sayyed al-Shinnawi, with first place going to UAE's Mohammad Zubeir al-Tajer al-Shamsi.
