Syrian Sculptor Carves a Message of Peace to the World from a 117-Ton Basalt Rock

Mar 02, 2010

Daraa, southern Syria (SANA) – Sculptor Ibrahim Abazid is working to transform a basalt rock weighing around 117 tons into a largest stone book documenting the achievements of human civilization.

Abazid has been working on the sculpture, which he dubbed "A Letter of Love and Peace to the World," for two years.

The artist pointed out that this sculpture will depict aspects of ancient and modern civilizations such as the Phoenician, Ancient Egyptian, Babylonian, Indian and Russian civilizations.

Abazid said this piece, which is halfway done, expressed the idea that human civilization is the result of all mankind's work, in addition to relaying a message of peace from Syria to the whole world.

Ibrahim Abazid created more than 200 sculptures of various sizes that express various humane and cultural ideas and concepts, including a piece dubbed "Dialogue of Cultures" that depicted the story of creation and themes related to time and astronomy.
