Bild am Sonntag: German Spies in Ships Off Syrian Coast Relay Information to Terrorists

Aug 19, 2012

BERLIN, (SANA) – German newspaper Bild am Sonntag reported that German spies are stationed in ships off the Syrian coast are relaying information to help the armed terrorist group.

The paper said that agents from the German Federal Intelligence Service are operating from ships deployed off the Syrian coast, using technology that allows them to monitor the Syrian armed forces up to a distance 600 kilometers inland.

The paper said that these spies report to US and British officers who in turn relay the information to the terrorists in Syria, adding that German intelligence agents are operating from the NATO base in Adana, Turkey.

The paper quoted a German intelligence official as saying that Germany can be proud of its significant contribution to the armed opposition, and also reported that a US official who wishes to remain anonymous said that no other western intelligence organization has good resources in Syria like German intelligence.

On a relevant note, a spokesperson of the German Defense Ministry confirmed that a German ship is operating in the area and will continue to do so for several months, but refused to give any details on this current mission.

Recently, German Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziere admitted to his country's involvement in supporting the armed groups in Syria.
