China Hopes Parliamentary Elections in Syria Would Help Enhancing Reform Process

May 08, 2012

BEIJING, (SANA)- China hoped that the parliamentary elections in Syria would enhance the reform process.

Chinese News Agency (Xinhua) on Monday quoted the Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei as saying in a press conference that China hopes that the elections would help strengthening the reform process to meet the demands of the Syrian people and to protect their interests.

Hong expressed his country's hope that all Syrian sides will take into account the  main interests of Syria and its people and work seriously to carry out their commitments to halt violence.

He said that there is "an important opportunity" for a political solution for the crisis in Syria, calling on all sides to carry out the UN Security Council's relevant resolutions, as well as the plan of the UN Envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan.

Hong added that all Syrian sides should vigorously cooperate to deploy the UN observers and to create the appropriate circumstances for easing the situation and bolstering the political solution for the crisis in Syria.
