NEW YORK, UN, (SANA)- UN Envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, called for deploying 300 observers in Syria swiftly as their presence has 'positive effect'.
Annan told UN Security Council by video on Tuesday that on April 21st he received a letter from the Syrian authorities saying that they pulled back all their forces and heavy weapons from inside cities, adding that the Syrian government also informed him about the continued attacks committted by the armed groups against the soldiers and the state's properties.
Annan said "If this withdrawal is confirmed, this would be encouraging," adding however that “the only promises that matter are those that are respected.”
Diplomats quoted Annan as saying "The swift deployment of the UN observers' mission in Syria is crucial, although no solution is without risks."
He continued as saying "We need eyes and ears on the ground, able to move freely and quickly..Violence has dropped significantly after the arrival of a very small number of observers to Homs," adding that "the situation in Syria continues to be unacceptable."
Annan said "The observers mission will be deployed for three months, not for an indefinite time."
