DAMASCUS, (SANA) – The Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) on Tuesday denied giving any information on the number of people in Syria who were displaced due to current events.
In a statement to SANA, SARC Director Marwan Abdullah affirmed that no SARC official gave any information to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) nor to Reuters on the numbers of displaced Syrians.
Abdullah said that the SARC and its branches are providing aid to around 1.5 million Syrians who were forced to leave their homes due to current events and relocated either within their own provinces or to other provinces.
He also pointed out that the SARC has plans to provide extra aid to displaced families to help them deal with the weather conditions of winter.
Earlier, Reuters quoted chief spokesperson of the UNHCR Melissa Fleming as saying that the SARC estimates the number of displaced people in Syria at around 2.5 million.
