President al-Assad issues legislative decree reducing mandatory military service by three months

Damascus, (SANA) – President Bashar al-Assad on Saturday issued Legislative Decree No. 35 for 2011 on reducing the duration of mandatory military service by three months.

According to the decree, the duration of mandatory military service becomes 18 months, beginning from the date of dispatching the conscripts and ending on the first day of the month following the elapsing of 18 months.

The duration of mandatory service for conscripts who didn't pass the fifth grade in elementary school is 21 months.

The decree is in effect as of 1/6/2011.
