Daraa Governorate, Danish Refugee Council discuss cooperation in rehabilitating makeshift centers

Daraa, SANA – Daraa Governor Mohammad Khaled al-Hannous discussed with Head of Programs at the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) Andrea Berardi and his accompanying delegation means to enhance joint cooperation in the field of rehabilitating and repairing the makeshift centers hosting displaced people in the southern province of Daraa.

During the meeting, al-Hannous affirmed the governorate’s readiness to offer all kinds of support to facilitate the work of the DRC in rehabilitating the temporary housing centers, highlighting the importance of developing a work plan for the DRC that will includes the kind of work required, the cost and other related stuff.

He pointed out that there are 117 makeshift centers in Daraa province, 11 of which are governmental centers, while the rest of them are affiliated to the private sector where services, supplies and requirements are provided by the state in cooperation with the international organizations.

In turn, the DRC official expressed the Council’s desire to expand its activities, including work on improving the livelihood of citizens, empowering women and promoting vocational training.

He hailed the cooperation provided by the ministries of Local Administration and Environment and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to the effect of having the activities cover the fields of education and engaging NGOs in the work to the best interest of the people residing in makeshift centers.

The DRC rehabilitated in three years around 75 makeshift centers and 185 apartments. It is now working on repairing 9 other makeshift centers.
