MPs question Social Affairs Minister about issues of beggary and people with special needs

Damascus, SANA – The People’s Assembly session on Thursday was dedicated to discussing the performance of the Social Affairs Ministry and its efforts to create the appropriate legislative environment for people with special needs and to tackle vagrancy and beggary.

Responding to the queries and questions put by the People’s Assembly members, Social Affairs Minister Rima al-Qadiri said the Ministry is currently working on sorting beggary cases, which have quite increased during the current crisis, in cooperation with the Interior and Justice ministries, the tourist police unit, volunteer teams and the emergency response teams of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC).

She also pointed out that the Ministry is working on establishing a center for wronged children and another center for battered women, adding that the Ministry has prepared a special document for monitoring and reporting of sexual and physical abuses and cases of child trafficking and beggary.

The Minister noted further that the Ministry is working in cooperation with the Central Bureau of Statistics on probing disability cases and sorting them by type to take that into consideration when taking any measures related to people with disabilities, mainly with regard to employment at the public establishments.
