Putin: Cessation of hostilities is important step towards inter-Syrian political settlement

Moscow, SANA – Russian President Vladimir Putin affirmed that ensuring the cessation of hostilities is an important step on the way of inter-Syrian political settlement.

His remarks came during a phone call with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, in which both sides discussed settlement of the Syrian crisis and the refugee issue facing the European Union (EU), the Kremlin press service said on Thursday.

“When discussing international problems, main attention was paid to the Syrian crisis with an emphasis on the necessity of observing ceasefire regime in this country,” the press service said.

The Kremlin added that the Russian President noted that ensuring the cessation of hostilities is a key factor for normalizing the international situation and improving the humanitarian situation in the region.

For his part, the Greek Prime Minister highly assessed the efforts in relation to the cessation of hostilities and, in turn, informed President Putin in detail about actions taken by the European Union aimed at settling the refugee problem.

On 27th of February, the cessation of hostilities in Syria entered into force in implantation of US-Russian agreement and UN Security Council resolution no.2268.
