Ambassador Khadour: Syria attaches growing importance to close cooperation with UNIDO

Vienna, SANA- Ambassador Hasan Khaddour, Permanent Representative of Syria to the UN in Vienna, asserted that Syria attaches great importance to closely cooperating with United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Speaking at the Industrial Development Board, fiftieth session, Khaddour affirmed ‘Syria highly consider UNIDO exerted efforts to support Syrian industrial development, and looks forwards to UNIDO engagement in Syria in light of the war and hard-hitting economic sanctions whose impacts linger since 2011.”

Ambassador Khaddour stated that the conditions of terrorist, economic war waged on Syria have had calamitous consequences on all sectors, particularly the industrial one; industrial areas have been systematically targeted by terrorist groups who looted plant machinery and supplies, smuggled them to Turkey while destroying others. Furthermore, waste treatment plants gradually went out of service, besides significant decrease in local industrial and craft facilities.

“Border crossings have been deeply affected, with closing some of which due to acts of vandalism and terrorism, not to mention using others by some neighboring States to facilitate the crossing of armed groups and mercenaries or supplying them with weapons,” Khadour noted.

Ambassador Khaddour underlined that the Syrian government is making outstanding efforts to meet challenges of economic blockade and unilateral coercive measures. “Therefore, Syria is counting on UNIDO fundamental supporting role to help the Syrian government to reconstruct the industrial sector”, Khaddour  went on to say, hailing in this regard the organization’s cooperation with Syria to launch the project of revitalization agri-food industry sector.

Khaddour concluded his statement saying that the Syrian government is looking forward to establishing global partnerships based on respect for the International Law principles and the provisions of the UN Charter.
