Sabbagh: Israel’s rejection of subjecting its nuclear facilities to comprehensive IAEA safeguards poses threat to international peace and security

Vienna, SANA- With the participation of Syria, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is currently holding a virtual meeting of the Board of Governors of the IAEA in Vienna in light of measures taken to tackle coronavirus.

Delivering a speech, Permanent Representative of Syria to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, said that Syria cooperated with IAEA completely regarding implementing safeguards under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The Ambassador said that Israel’s rejection of all initiatives to make the Middle East a nuclear-weapon-free zone threatens security and stability in the region, and the continuous rejection to subject its nuclear facilities to comprehensive IAEA safeguards makes it a threat to international peace and security.

Sabbagh pointed to Iran’s commitment to implement the joint comprehensive plan of action since its establishment, stressing that the United States’ withdrawal from the plan unilaterally and without any legitimate justifications is a flagrant violation of Security Council resolution no. 2231.

He said that Syria looks forward to the agency to carrying out its mandated tasks in full neutrality, independence, objectivity and professionalism and not to fall victim to external pressures aimed at implementing political agendas targeting the sovereign countries.
