Mikdad and Iranian officials share convergent views on latest developments

Tehran, SANA – Adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran Ali Akbar Velayati on Wednesday met Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad, affirming to him Iran’s continuing support for the Syrian people and government in various fields until victory against terrorism is achieved.

Velayati said that all plots against Syria have failed due to the Syrian people’s steadfastness, the army’s sacrifices, the wisdom of president Bashar al-Assad, and the support of allies and resistance forces.

For his part, Mikdad said that the resistance axis is achieving one victory after another against terrorists and their supporters, noting that the victories will continue until Syria is cleared of terrorism.

The meeting was attended by Syrian Ambassador in Tehran Adnan Mahmoud.

In a press conference following the meeting, the two sides reiterated the firm and unequivocal position of the countries of the Resistance Axis to continue cooperation and joint coordination in the fight against terrorism and its supporters and thwarting their plans that aim at undermining the countries of the region.

“I conveyed greetings of President Bashar al-Assad to the Supreme leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, President Hassan Rouhani and the Iranian government and people,” Mikdad said, pointing out that Syrian and Iranian views were convergent regarding various issues.

He noted that the support provided by Iran has played an important role in achieving victory and foiling schemes that serve the Zionist entity and the US interests in the region.

“We in Syria reject the measures taken by Turkey in Idleb and other areas, and demand that the Turkish occupying army withdraw from Idleb and the other areas,” said Mikdad, stressing that Turkey must respect the sovereignty of Syria and decisions made in Astana.

He also reiterated Syria’s rejection of the attempts to divide Iraq and support for Iran in relation to the US President’s stance on the Iranian nuclear deal.

Velayati, for his part, reiterated strong rejection of the Kurdish referendum in northern Iraq, saying “we strongly oppose any attempt to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of neighboring countries.”

He stressed that the Resistance Axis will foil all the schemes aiming at undermining the region and its identity and heritage.

He pointed out that Iran will continue providing support to the legitimate governments in Syria and Iraq and will prevent any attempt to undermine their sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that the US schemes in Syria will fail just like they failed in Iraq.

In the same context, Mikdad met Iranian Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari and discussed with him the latest developments in Syria and the agenda of Astana 7 meeting.

Both sides touched upon issues related to the de-escalation zones in Syria and exchanged viewpoints on the new proposals for establishing sustainable stability there.

“There are many issues that we will discuss with Mikdad during the meeting of the Joint Political Committee today. Concerted efforts should be made through joint mechanisms on Astana 7 meeting on Syria,” Jaberi Ansari said.

During a later meeting with Speaker of Iran’s Shura Council Ali Larijani, Mikdad said that Syria, in cooperation with its allies, will continue combating terrorism no matter how much support is provided to the terrorists, adding that progress is being made towards liberating al-Bokmal on the Syria-Iraqi borders.

He pointed out that had it not been for the US support to terrorists and attempts to hinder the advance of Syrian Arab Army and its allies, ISIS would have been no more.

“We cannot trust Turkish attitudes,” Mikdad said, adding that what Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has done to Syria and Iraq has given impetus to Kurds’ attempts to secede, affirming that the Turkish incursion into Idleb is contrary to Astana agreements and the international decisions, which is “completely rejected and we will confront it.”

He pointed out that his talks in Tehran dealt with the preparations, agenda and follow-up steps of Astana 7 meeting, as well as the “conference to be held by the Russian friends in Syria in the future.”

For his part, Larijani said that Iran will continue to support Syria and the axis of resistance in various fields.
